ASTM A269 & ASTM A213
Understand the specifications behind a tubing enquiry. A material grade, a manufacturing specification and an inspection certificate describe different aspects of the product.
Two specifications with different scopes
| Specification | General scope | What the buyer should confirm |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A269/A269M | Seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. | Specify seamless construction where required, plus grade and dimensions. |
| ASTM A213/A213M | Seamless ferritic and austenitic alloy-steel boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes. | Confirm the grade, wall basis and project requirements. |
The designations are not interchangeable shorthand. A tube can only be described as meeting both when its documentation supports both specifications. Put the required specification and edition on the purchase enquiry.
316, 316L and dual certification
316 and 316L are material grade designations. The L designation identifies the lower-carbon grade. A dual-certified 316/316L product must meet the relevant requirements for both grades; verify this on the certificate rather than relying only on a website description.
Grade selection must also consider the process fluid, chloride exposure, temperature and cleaning requirements. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant, but it is not suitable for every chemical or environment.
A practical purchase description
For a project, add the document revision, tests, acceptance criteria and any independent inspection required. Confirm nominal, minimum or average wall requirements with the supplier.

An ASTM specification does not, by itself, establish every fitting compatibility requirement or certify an installed pressure system. See material certification and traceability.
Frequently asked questions
Does ASTM A269 mean the tube is seamless?
Not by itself. A269 covers both seamless and welded tubing. State seamless construction explicitly when that is required.
Does an ASTM specification replace an inspection certificate?
No. The specification defines product requirements; the inspection documentation records conformity and the relevant test information for the supply.
